Finding Your Rental Car at Palma Intermodal Station

Palma Intermodal Station is the central transportation hub located at Plaça d'Espanya in the heart of Mallorca. While a few boutique rental kiosks may operate directly inside the main terminal area, the majority of major car rental agencies are situated just a short walk outside the station. Are there toll roads on Mallorca, and how do I pay for them?

Mallorca has no toll roads—all island highways (including the MA-1 and MA-13) are free. However, if you take the ferry to mainland Spain or drive through France, the AP-7 Mediterranean highway charges tolls (roughly €30-50 depending on distance). Rentals typically have an electronic toll device (viaT) pre-installed, with charges added to your final bill plus a small admin fee. Ask your rental company to confirm before you cross the mainland.

How scary are the mountain roads in Serra de Tramuntana? I'm planning to drive from Valldemossa to Sa Calobra.

The MA-1081 from Valldemossa to Sa Calobra is dramatic but manageable if you're cautious. The road has 12 hairpin turns and drops 700 meters—it's narrower than typical US roads and has guardrails that would be considered insufficient by American standards. Drive slowly on the inside of turns (wider view), avoid peak hours (10am-2pm) when tour buses dominate, and never attempt the road in heavy rain. Rental compact cars handle it fine; avoid large SUVs as they're harder to maneuver on tight switchbacks.

What's the parking situation in Palma's old town? Can I just pull up to my hotel?

What fuel type do rental cars in Mallorca use, and should I get the full-to-full or prepaid tank?

Over 80% of rental cars in Spain run on diesel (gasóleo), not gasoline. Check your rental agreement carefully—if you have a gasoline car, you'll use 95-octane unleaded (sin plomo 95). The standard policy is full-to-full: you receive a full tank and must return it full to avoid refueling charges at above-market rates (€1.80-2.20/liter vs. €1.40-1.60 at pumps). Always photograph the fuel gauge at pickup and return. Gas stations are plentiful near towns but can be sparse in mountain areas—don't run below a quarter tank when exploring Serra de Tramuntana.

Is it safe to drive in Mallorca in summer? Any special traffic rules I should know?
