I have to complain a bit first because at the start I really thought I would spend more money on this Madrid rental and in the end I actually got some money back and I booked it through QEEQ. Now if I go back to how it started it looks like this. I planned to pick up a Smart fortwo from OK Mobility in Madrid on the afternoon of July 10. Small car two doors automatic. For my business trip it was perfect. Easy to park in the city and not a pain in traffic. That night I was in my hotel room working on my meeting notes. I checked my credit card and the rental charge looked familiar but also a bit different. I thought maybe they charged me more by mistake. I opened my email and checked the order. I saw a new order number 94167779 and the total price was actually lower than what I remembered. It was about ten dollars cheaper. My first reaction was that something went wrong. My plan was to use the car in Madrid from the afternoon of July 10 to the afternoon of July 21. If the booking was canceled or changed in a bad way all my meetings would be a mess. Then I checked my old confirmation and I remembered that when I booked I chose a service called Price Drop Protector. I just paid the normal price and they would watch the price for me. The original order was 12424424. When they saw the price for the same Smart car went down they changed it to this new order. For me it felt like only two things happened. I got a new confirmation email and I saw a refund of the difference on my card. That evening I was at the hotel desk with my laptop open and my meeting slides on the screen. On my phone I had my flight and hotel info and this car booking. I realized I did nothing and the price just dropped by itself and the money came back to me. As a business traveler I care a lot about time. Normally I do not have time to check prices every day. I would never open ten sites just to save ten dollars. This time it was like someone checked for me in secret and when the price went down they put the money back. I checked the refund info and it was around nine and a half dollars. In Madrid that is two coffees or a short taxi ride to a client office. It is not a big amount but it felt really nice. My schedule is always full with meetings emails and calls and having one thing that quietly saves money in the background felt very different. The next morning on my way to a client meeting I was sitting in the back of a taxi. I was thinking about parking for the Smart and the fuel price and then I thought again about that small refund. I felt like I made a smart choice. I always see car rental as a fixed cost. I did not expect that after confirmation the price could still go down and help my business budget a bit. For me the strange part is that I did not argue with anyone. I did not ask for a lower price and I did not talk with the rental desk about discounts. The change in price was something they found and it just showed up on my bill. They basically did the math for me. I just need to follow my plan pick up the car on July 10 in the afternoon and return it on July 21 in Madrid and I get the cheaper price. For someone like me who flies a lot for work this feeling of saving money without extra effort fits my life very well.
