The wind was really cold in Keflavik in Iceland. When the wind blew on my face it felt like a knife. I walked into the small office of the rental company with my suitcase and got ready to pick up the Dacia Duster. I was alone and I felt a bit excited. I thought I could finally drive a 4x4 in the snow and see the country by myself. I just checked some basic info at the counter then signed the paper and took the car. I did not think there would be any trouble later. When I booked on QEEQ I added AXA Full Coverage. My idea was simple. I was traveling alone and I did not know the place well so one more layer of protection could make me feel less nervous. While I was driving around Iceland the car felt good and steady. The snow and wind changed all the time. In my head I felt kind of proud and thought my trip plan was pretty good. The real problem started after I returned the car. I picked up the car around December twenty third and drove for a few days. I gave it back in Keflavik in the evening around December twenty seventh. When I returned the car the staff from the rental company checked it very carefully. I thought it was just a normal check. Later when I went back to my room I saw a message from my credit card. There was an extra charge. I opened the bill and saw they had added an insurance that I never planned to buy. At that moment I felt really annoyed. In my mind I kept saying I already had my own insurance so why is there another one. I tried to remember the pick up time. The office was noisy. The wind was loud and there were many people talking. The staff spoke fast and I just signed the contract like usual. Later I found out there was one more item inside that I did not really need. The rental company said they had explained it and I had signed so they would not refund me. I felt very weak in that moment. I was in a foreign country alone and they were very firm. I knew that arguing more at the counter would not help. Then I thought about the AXA Full Coverage I bought when I made the booking. I decided to contact customer service and tell them that the rental company had charged me extra for insurance. I also took screenshots of my credit card bill and sent them. At first I was not sure if this insurance could really help me. In my head I was thinking maybe it was just for show and in the end I would still lose the money. I was a bit surprised because they did not ask me to repeat the story many times. They just confirmed some details and said they would help me with the claim. After some time I got a message that they could pay me back for that extra amount. It was a bit over one hundred euro. When I saw that message I felt very lucky that I had bought it. I felt I got back what I lost. Then I kept watching my bank account to see when the money would arrive. During the wait I felt nervous and thought maybe it got stuck in the bank. I asked them again about it. The customer service checked for me and told me the progress in a calm way. After a while I opened my banking app again and the refund was finally there. At that moment my mind relaxed. This solo trip had some problems but at least I did not lose that money. When I think of the whole thing from pick up to the extra charge then to the final refund the most important part is that I added AXA Full Coverage in the first place. Without this protection I think I would have to accept that extra one hundred euro and more as a stupid cost. Now when I look at the claim record in my bank I always remember myself walking in the cold wind in Keflavik with my suitcase. I looked a bit helpless but I still had some real protection behind me.
